How to clean your curtains

Curtains, drapes and blinds all gather dust and pet hair over time making them not the most hygienic of fabrics in the house. To keep your curtains in tip top condition, it is important to clean them regularly. Although the task may seem very tricky, it is actually quite simple. While the upholstery tool from the vacuum cleaner is useful for everyday, washing curtains once every few years is ideal to maintain them well. Here are some simple curtain cleaning hints:

  1. The best way to start is to look at the fabric or material the curtains are made from.

Garment Fabric:

If they are garment fabric curtains, remove all hooks and shake the curtains outside. Wash them two panels at a time using a cold temperature setting and dry on low heat (as you would delicate items). Immediately remove from the dryer and hang them back up.

Sheer/Lace Fabric:

Because sheer curtains can snag in the washing machine, it is best to fill a large tub or sink with cold water and hand wash them. Use a teaspoon of dish wash detergent or laundry detergent. Soak in the soapy mixture for 10 minutes or more to remove the dirt and then wash again.

Dry Clean Only:

If your curtains say “dry clean only”, it is pertinent to take them to a reputable dry cleaner and have them professionally cleaned. If you are looking for dry cleaners in Earls Court, look no further than Gold Dry Cleaners. Our team of experts will come to your address, help you take down the curtains and dry clean them in our premises. They will be delivered to you crisp and new. We can even help you hang them back up! Usually, formal or lined curtains in materials such as velvet and brocade are “dry clean only”.

  1. The rule of thumb to cleaning curtains at home is to remove them from the hooks and shaking them to get rid of any dirt/debris which has accumulated before getting started with the actual process of cleaning them.
  2. To maintain curtains for longer, shake them down everyday and let the dust and dirt settle on the floor before vacuuming. Your room will smell fresher and cleaner.
  3. The upholstery tool on your vacuum cleaner is a good option for monthly maintenance. A powerful steam cleaner is another good option if you want to get rid of stubborn stains without all the effort of taking the curtains down and putting them back up again.

If you want to have a fresh smelling set of curtains which lasts you through the years, place an order on our website and put your feet up. We will take care of the rest for you!
